Possible to use computer as phone?

Hi everyone,
Newbie to VOIPo. I am waiting for the device to arrive and was wondering if it is possible to use the computer as a phone in the meantime, as I have been doing with Skype. Since my plan is already counted as having started it would be great if there was a way to actually use it, especially as it has become somewhat urgent for us.

Unfortunately you billing period has begun because you can configure voicemail, and forward calls to another number.

You cannot use a softphone until the ATA has registered.
After that, you can use a soft phone like xlite.

Thank you for replying. I just this moment found a post saying the same thing on an older thread. Too bad. Guess I will have to just wait.
